XO, Kitty season 1 recap

A spinoff of the beloved ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ Netflix franchise, XO, Kitty season 1 was just the kind of no brainer teenage drama we needed. Here’s a recap of everything that happened so far.

2 years ago, we saw Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart), Lara Jean Covey’s (Lana Condor) younger sister, take a leap of faith for love, just like her elder sister did! She embarks on a journey halfway across the globe to be with her long distance boyfriend. But it all started when she was cleaning her attic with her grandparents and found a bunch of memories from her mom’s life when she was her age. Turns out that her mom had attended Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS) on a scholarship programme when she wanted to learn more about her Korean roots. Co-incidentally, Kitty’s long distance boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-Young) also happens to be attending the same school.

This makes her want to go on the same self discovery path as her mom. So she prepares a PPT to convince her dad to send her to KISS. Just on a whim, her dad agreed, and the next scene was her on a plane. I wish we all had this kind of luck to just hop on a plane and go to Seoul whenever we felt like. Kitty had zero struggles to get a visa too but that’s a different issue, and just like that she was in the land of K-Pop and K-dramas. With barely any knowledge of the language and culture she steps out in the city after missing her airport shuttle to KISS. Again, as her amazing luck would have it, she crossed paths with Yu-Ri (Gia Kim), who also happened to be going to the same school and gave her a ride.

Later that evening when Kitty wants to give her boyfriend a surprise at the welcome party, little did she know, an unpleasant surprise would be waiting for her in return. Just as she makes her way to meet Dae, she finds out that he is actually dating Yu-Ri. A heartbroken Kitty decides to go home, just then she finds a hospital bracelet with her mom’s name written on it inside her mom’s memory box. She decides to find out if she has a long lost sibling she doesn’t know and hence stays back. But her living situation for better or for worse was in the boys dorm due to a clerical error. So there she was in the same dorm as Dae, Min-Ho (Lee Sang-Heon) and Quincy (Anthony Keyvan).

She also finds a confidante in Alex (Peter Thurnwald) who is KISS’ new professor all the way from Australia. He is often seen giving Kitty pep talks and the two form a strong sibling like connection. She even starts getting convinced that maybe he could be her mom’s long lost kid she was searching for. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of tension between Dae and Kitty. She cannot believe she was two timed and Dae wants to tell her the actual truth about his secret rendez-vous. Which is that Yu-Ri is just using him as a cover to date Julianna (Regan Aliyah). As the daughter of the principal of KISS, life has been tough for Yu-Ri. She is constantly expected to be perfect and follow societal norms, and being queer just did not fit in that memo for her mother. So as Kitty and Dae grew apart, Kitty and Min-Ho grew closer. They had the perfect enemies to lovers arc. They hated each other’s guts in the beginning but the more they spent time together, the more they felt like they were no longer lonely in a foreign country.

Just when Min-Ho starts having feelings for Kitty, Dae tells her the truth, and now she is stuck between two guys. If that wasn’t enough, she also has a sex dream about Yu-Ri which makes her realize that she might be bi-sexual. So just like in every teen drama, Kitty has to look deep into who her heart really wants.

There’s also a plethora of drama going on with Alex when he finds out that Professor Lee (Micheal K. Lee) is his father and his mother is not Kitty’s mom but in fact Principal Lim, who is Yu-Ri’s mother. Principal Lim (Kim Yun-Jin) tells Kitty, her mom helped her cover up the whole pregnancy but after that things went wrong between them which is why she refused to accept that she knew Kitty's mom. Of course, with so much going on, Kitty had barely studied and was flunking in all her subjects. She had to participate in extracurricular activities like the Korean traditional dance where she again shares an intense moment with Min-Ho, and studied hard for her finals.

But she just made it this semester and when she was happily screaming about that, the world finds out she had been staying in the boys dorm room the whole time and her scholarship is terminated. She packs her bags to go back to LA and also shares a sweet farewell with Dae where he tells her that while he doesn’t know what the future holds, she will always be the first girl he loved. Unable to confess her feelings to Yu-Ri because of Julianna, an upset Kitty makes her way to her economics class seat. Only to find out that Min-Ho is also going back home with her and has ditched his business class seat just to sit next to her. The series ends with him confessing his love for her.
