As a Malayalee, it's my duty to get you to watch more of our films. So, here's a list of wholesome Malayalam movies that will make for the perfect Christmas watch.
Regional cinema has been experiencing its moment, thanks to people recognising the value of genuine storytelling. This popularity also indicates that language does not need to be the main factor for anyone to choose binge-watching a movie or a show. Perhaps this love for compelling stories is also why we always seek out heartwarming films to watch, especially during the festive season. With Christmas approaching, settling down to watch comforting movies is part of this season's tradition that we look forward to. Usually, our Christmas watchlist features Hollywood films regarded as classics like The Holiday to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But there are plenty of Indian fillms that are ideal for Christmas viewing, especially for those who are waiting to explore regional cinema. The Malayalam industry has produced enough and more wholesome films that feel like a hug - just what we need right now!

Here are some reccos!
Guppy - Manorama Max
Nothing speaks about the joy of Christmas than seeing a young boy choosing to sell fish so he can buy his mom a new wheelchair. Guppy is exactly the kind of movie you would want to be binging on during this season. From scenes that leave you with a full heart to ones that remind you of the power of kindness, the movie captures the essence of the season. Add to the fact that the real life Christmas carols always ends with them dancing to Gabrielinte, which just proves why you need to watch the movie.
Sudani from Nigeria - Amazon Prime Video
If 'hug' were a movie, Sudani from Nigeria would be the perfect example of what it would look like. A movie that follows the lives of a small football-loving town with people who love the sport so much that they care about the players like Samuel, the Nigerian footballer who comes to Kerala in the hopes of giving his family a better life. The film is the perfect watch for anyone wanting to snuggle under a blanket with a hot cocoa.
Ambili - Amazon Prime Video
Another masterpiece starring Soubin Shahir, the movie talks about love, friendship and the importance of wanting hope just so one can keep living. Showing how Ambili is loved by the town for his quirky traits, while he himself dares to hope for a happy ending, radiates what this holiday season stands for.
Da Thadiya - Manorama Max
Da Thadiya presents a sympathetic narrative that follows the life of an obese man who is surrounded by loved ones, all while he dreams of a caring and fulfilling life for himself. Featuring a memorable cameo by Nivin Pauly, the movie offers a satisfying experience, evoking laughter, tears, and smiles with its heartfelt message.
Manassinakkare - Amazon Prime Video
The essence of the holidays revolves around family and togetherness, which is precisely what this Sathiyan Anthikadu film explores. Left behind by her own kids, Sheela's Kochu Thresia finds compassion and love in a stranger who values her more than her own blood. With wholesome songs, a setting that amplifies the beauty of Kerala and celebrates the authentic Kerala Christian food, there is nothing better than watching Manassinakkare during Christmas time.
Falimy - JioHotstar
One thing we really look forward to this season is the chance to go on holiday, but what we don't look forward to is having to take that holiday with your family. Falimy is a wild travel adventure film that begins with them wanting to fulfil the grandfather's wish, only for them to end up forming a stronger bond, thanks to all the chaos that unfolds.
Philips and the Monkey Pen - JioHotstar
A cute little story where a young kid believes in the magic that a pen holds, while he learns to deal with very real emotions like grief and love. Philips and the Monkey Pen is everything that we imagine Christmas to be and that's exactly why this makes for the perfect festive watch, especially with your family.
Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho - Sun NXT
Believing in Santa Claus is similar to having a dream and wishing for it to come true. Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho tells the story of a young boy who dreams of flying in a plane, while one man does everything he can to help make that dream a reality. The film is about hope, friendship, and, most importantly, humanity.
