Citizenship Amendment Bill

Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship Amendment bill on Monday night with a majority of 311. The bill is to be tabled in Rajya Sabha for its approval. People are however protesting against the bill.

In the new Citizenship Amendment Bill a provision of the previous bill has been amended. It says that a person must have lived in India or worked for the federal government for at least 11 years before they can apply for citizenship. Additionally, the people belonging to communities like Parsi, Sikhs, Hindu, Christian and Jain who have come from Pakistan, Afganistan and Bangladesh till December 31, 2014, and are facing prosecution there will receive legal citizenship and will no longer be illegal immigrants in India. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha last night with a majority of 311 against 80 votes. The bill will be now taken to Rajya Sabha for its approval. However, the government is facing a backlash as people are not happy with the passing of the bill. With the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) claiming it to be "a dangerous turn in the wrong direction". While some are supporting the bill there are people who have taken to the streets and are protesting against the same.
