From calling hosts' out for being ignorant to finding a lack of substance in the show, content creators are sharing their take on Two Much with Kajol and Twinkle's episodes and you're going to want to listen to it all.
Indian talk shows have always had their charm whether it is Rendezvous with Simi Garewal or Koffee with Karan. The reason Indian audiences loved them is not just because of the chance to see their beloved celebrities in their most raw and genuine selves, but also for the controversial opinions that emerge from these conversations. These shows allow us to enjoy the juiciest, most unfiltered versions of these film stars while we form our own opinions about them. When Prime Video announced their talk show with two of Bollywood’s yesteryear actors who have their own fanbase outside the screen, people had high hopes. Knowing how relaxed and upfront Kajol and Twinkle Khanna are, audiences looked forward to their interactions with fellow celebrities. From juicy Bollywood gossip to reactions on the most controversial and relevant topics, fans expected a lot. But, judging by how people have reacted to the six episodes so far, it seems the expectations were not fully met.
One thing is for sure, a lot of the show relies on the personalities of its stars, specifically the quick-witted Twinkle and the bold, unpredictable Kajol. While the show makes an effort to work around their dynamic, it ultimately falls flat. Perhaps the issue is that it tries too hard instead of allowing the conversations to flow naturally. Knowing how well-informed and opinionated Twinkle is, we were excited to see her challenge industry insiders. Given that these celebrities are also their friends, we expected a deeper exploration of Bollywood. However, what we have witnessed so far is a series of forced and pretentious conversations, which have sparked debates about their ignorance and them justifying bad behaviour, whether in Bollywood or personal relationships.
While each episode has had its own share of 'Is this for real?' moments, the one featuring Karan Johar and Janhvi Kapoor sparked significant discussions online, particularly among Gen Z creators. In one of their game segments, where guests had to choose between two options, Kajol and Twinkle Khanna posed the question of whether physical cheating is worse than emotional cheating. While the senior celebrities quickly made their choices, Janhvi questioned the ethics of either in a relationship. One guest responded with a dismissive "Raat gayi, baat gayi" regarding one-night stands, while Karan remarked, "Thand toh lagegi". Many appreciated Janhvi's perspective on trust, but the laughter from the others as they brushed off the topic as just another compromise in relationships sparked further discussions online.
Creators noted the flaws in the show, stating that many of the conversations felt forced rather than organic, unlike other beloved shows we grew up loving from the past. They pointed out that the hosts, while discussing feminism and the mistreatment of women in the industry, decided to limit questions about marriage, motherhood, and relationships for their female guests. This was seen as hypocritical. Additionally, the hosts were criticised for being condescending towards younger participants, especially when Twinkle pressed Janhvi, suggesting that her youth made her idealistic about what she believed, especially calling out emotional or physical cheating as a dealbreaker.
These reactions sum up what most of us have been feeling about the show so far:
As audiences, it's easy for us to be critical of a show. While it's important to express opinions that may highlight bad portrayals of women in the industry, relationships, and human behaviour, we must also consider that some of these elements may be part of the show that secretly wants to ragebait people into watching it. We cannot shy away from the fact that, as an audience, conversational opinions make us want to discuss and talk about them because of how triggering they are. In that sense, this show has been successful.
