Our favourite Brit popstar is officially 32 and we're here to celebrate with pomp and 10 of his best songs that your playlist needs!

It was a quiet evening when a 13-year-old me heard the news. It felt like the ground beneath my feet was shaken. The world’s most famous boy band, One Direction, had just announced their split. Listening to One Direction has to be the fondest memory of my teen years. As someone who was still figuring herself out and experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions (and hormones), their songs felt like an escape. While most Indian fans fell head over heels for Zayn Malik, I found my safe space in Harry Styles, a shy young lad from a quaint English town in Cheshire, also the youngest member of the band. 

The mere thought of not listening to my favourite artist perform and sing felt like the end of the world. However, it all changed when Styles announced his first studio album in 2017, which was also his first solo album since the split. I have to admit, initially, it was a strange experience to listen to his independent music. But soon, I was transported to my 13-year-old self and remembered why he was my favourite of them all. His music has the power to make his fans feel heard and loved. 

Since his first solo album, Styles and all his fans have come a long way. From his first Grammy award to his fourth studio album, 'Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally', we have built a community filled with love and kindness. As my most cherished artist turns 32, I can’t help but reminisce on his brilliant career so far and think of all the soulful music he’s created.

Watermelon Sugar High

How can we talk about Harry Styles and not talk about Watermelon Sugar High? If you’re in a chirpy mood and feel like jiving to a wholesome track on a beautiful, bright day, then this has to be a part of your playlist. Shot with a film-filter effect, this video is the embodiment of summer. And, with summer just a few months away, it’s time we warm ourselves up with some Watermelon Sugar High energy!

As It Was

The entire world was obsessed with Harry’s House (his third studio album), and it was all because of this bop! As It Was is a song about loneliness and how it can be overwhelming and all-consuming; however, on the contrary, the melody, rhythm, and beats will compel you to move your body. The internet went bollocks with numerous edits, and so did I when I listened to it for the very first time!

PS: The best part of the song has to be the bridge!

Cherry

On days when I feel like bawling like a baby, I play Cherry. This has to be one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs ever written. It hits close to home when the One Direction singer talks about his significant other, whom he misses, and how their love has made him who he is today. The lyrics, especially, “I noticed that there’s a piece of you in how I dress, take it as a compliment” - literally make my heart ache in a comforting way. This song reminds us that no matter how difficult things get, in the end, love always wins.

Kiwi

By now, I guess we’ve established how much our chap loves fruits and funny enough, this song has nothing to do with kiwis! If you’re an OG fan, you know when I say this song left us shook. It screams the rockstar girlfriend trope, and we’re here for it! The drums, electric guitar, and prominent bass make this song an electrifying experience. When I’m feeling a bit funky, this track plays on full volume!

Little Freak

Little Freak captures the magic that words fail to express. This has to be one of my favourites from the album, and for all the right reasons. The lyrics, the rhythm, and of course, his voice make this song feel like a warm hug on days when you’re a little under the weather. When I feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stressed, I find myself listening to this on loop. So the next time you’re experiencing big emotions, remember - everything’s going to be just fine.

Matilda

Through Matilda, Styles heals all the hearts he didn’t break. This song feels like an open apology to everyone who had to go through hardships in life that they didn’t sign up for. If you’re an eldest daughter, this song is made for you. So the next time you feel like you’re not doing enough, listen to this lyric: “You showed me a power that’s strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days.”

Late Night Talking

Late Night Talking is exactly what the title reads. Through the lyrics, we can see highlights of the feelings and experiences one goes through while staying up till midnight, talking to their better half. If you’re into songs that lift your mood and make you feel good, this one definitely deserves a spot on your playlist.

Golden

Golden has to be one of the most underrated songs from a highly underrated album. Fine Line (Harry’s second studio album) was a masterpiece and left millions of fans in awe. As Harry would describe it, Golden is the perfect road-trip song. Imagine the wind in your hair, crisp sunlight on your face, all while listening to this gem!

Aperture

This one’s for all the fans who were eagerly waiting for HS4. By now, we understand how diverse Harry’s music range is, and this track is a true testament to that. Experimental, techno, eccentric - yet a major bop - is how I’d describe Aperture. While we wait for the singer's fourth studio album, 'Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally', I’ll be playing this song nonstop, and I’m sure you will too.

What Makes You Beautiful

It wouldn’t be a fair birthday celebration if we didn’t address the elephant in the room! If you’re a 2000s kid, you know how phenomenal One Direction was. For me, What Makes You Beautiful marked the beginning of the One Direction craze. So what better way to celebrate his birthday than by listening to one of his greatest hits?
