New Update
Conrad beach confession

The much awaited beach confession scene finally happened in last night’s episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty and here’s our take on a scene that sure is going to be touted as iconic over the years!

It’s Belly and Jeremiah’s bachelorette-bachelor parties respectively and the two promise to meet each other post the event. In a game of telepathy between the two, Jeremiah says they should meet at the pool whereas Belly was thinking about the beach all along. That was the first hint in the episode towards Conrad’s beach love confession. Because the beach has always been special for Belly andConrad. It’s where they shared their first kiss and it’s where she gets to know how deeply he cares about her. It will always play a significant role in their relationship. Belly keeps her end of the promise and shows up at the beach at the end of a thoughtfully intense night (if you know, you know). But Jeremiah was already passed out on his bed. And as the story has shown us time and again that whenever Jeremiah bails on Belly, Conrad shows up and he does not disappoint this time either!

When Belly walks on the beach, she finds Conrad sitting inside a lighthouse, lost in thought. He calls her up saying that he wants to talk to her, she hesitates because she has been thinking about him all night even though she shouldn’t. But he gives her his hand and gently pulls her up. He tells her that Jeremiah cheated on her in Cabo. She says she already knows and at that point Conrad not only was mad at her but he almost couldn’t recognize the love of his life. Belly simply wasn’t one to take something like this from a guy and yet she not only forgave Jeremiah for what he did, she was even defending him. The moment starts to grow intense from then on, it felt as if Conrad finally found the courage to say what he has been suppressing for four years and he just went for it. “Fuck. I still love you”, he says in an impulsive moment. Belly’s heart stops and what follows after that is every book reader's dream to see it come to life. He looks at Belly with tears in his eyes and says “Don’t be with him. Don’t marry him. Be with me.” It felt as if his pain reached us through the screens. He keeps his hand near his heart and says "You'll always be there. here" and that for me was the peak of the series so far! I don’t know why I felt so nervous watching him say that as if I was the one he was saying it to!

Feature-The-Summer-I-Turned-Pretty-Recap

Even though Belly’s reflex to his confession is to shut him down because with her wedding in two days, she probably feels it's too late to get out of it all. But the scene overall is everything Conrad always wanted to say but never could. It felt like watching an early 2000s rom-com that’s going to stay with me for years to come. Like Noah confesses to Ally at the end of The Notebook, or when Jess confesses to Rory in Gilmore Girls or when Laurie tells Joe in Little Women that she is the one! Conrad as a character speaks to everyone who has had to let go of the love of their life because they are terrified at the thought of being vulnerable in front of someone else. But by the time they realize that it’s already too late! He is for the ones who have had to watch the love of their life love someone else and pretend to be happy about it. His confession resonates to many because it is what a lot of us want to say out loud. But he also serves as a reminder to love deeply, madly and passionately in the era of hook ups and casual dating! Conrad’s speech is proof that he is a man written by a woman and while we wait for the next episode to arrive, we’ll mentally still be at the beach wanting to just give Conrad a tight hug and tell him it's going to be okay!
