Navarasa

Netflix's Tamil anthology, Navarasa with a stellar ensemble cast promises to take you on a ride of 9 emotions through 9 stories.

It's the season of anthologies and Netflix's Tamil anthology, Navarasa releasing on August 6 on the platform brings together some of the biggest directors, actors, and technicians of the Tamil cinema for free. The film is produced by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan and is an initiative to help those filmmakers in Tamil cinema who have been impacted during the COVID-19 induced lockdown as the earnings all go towards COVID relief. The less than 2-minute trailer gives us a glimpse of what the title already insinuates, 9 stories exploring 9 emotions aka rasas, as the Natya Shashtra mentions.

The film brings together nine remarkable directors Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Karthik Subbaraj, Karthick Naren, Priyadarshan, Rathindran R Prasad, Sarjun, and Vasanth S Sai to bring each rasa to life. Each short film under this huge umbrella is expected to represent a rasa: love, laughter, sorrow, anger, courage, fear, disgust, wonder, and peace. Navarasa features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Revathy, Parvathy, Aishwarya Rajesh, Poorna and Riythvika, Suriya, Arvind Swami, Vijay Sethupathi, Prakash Raj, Siddharth, Atharvaa, Gautham Karthik, and Ashok Selvan.

While the trailer seems to pack nine different emotions with nine different stories, it also seems to cover different genres of cinema. From the social issues-based genre to the sci-fi genre, it covers it all. Though the trailer doesn't reveal much in terms of the plot, it just speaks about the magnitude of the film. It brings together top leading composers including AR Rahman, D Imman, Ghibran, and top cinematographers such as Santosh Sivan, Balasubramaniam, Manoj Paramahamsa among others.

Commenting on the beauty of Navarasa, Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan said, “Emotions may be momentary but some of those moments stay with us for life. Emotions are part of every day of our life and yet some of these can change the course of our lives. This is what makes Navarasa interesting. Though at most times there is more than one emotion in play, often it is one that takes control of our mind and soul and spurs us into action. Navarasa is a collection of nine stories born out of nine such emotions. Some of these pivot in a moment. Some take shape from deep-rooted feelings. Navarasa showcases them all. We are extremely happy and proud of our colleagues in the industry, directors, actors, and technicians, who have created engaging, exciting stories from these nine emotions or the classical rasas. We are sure viewers across the globe will enjoy and celebrate this confluence of rasas.”

We can't wait for this special project to be on our home screens soon! What about you?
