Thousands came together, from all around the world, to celebrate the news of Thailand legalising same-sex marriage and these tweets show just how happy the world is.
Queer couples and love stories are always celebrated in movies and books, but these stories don't always get their happy ending in real life. Considering how marriage equality is something queer folks continue to fight for,Β Thailandβs latest law serves as a momentous win.Β On Thursday, January 23, a new bill was passed in Thailand that allows queer couples to marry. This legislation has been warmly received and has inspired numerous heartwarming stories of love and commitment.
While Thailand was already considered safe and open to queer folks, it also became the first country in Southeast Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow people of the same gender to marry each other. The law approved by both houses of parliament in June last year and endorsed by the Thai king in September, became a major milestone for LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. It will allow couples to register their marriages with full legal, financial, and medical rights, as well as adoption and inheritance rights.
The same day that the law was passed, Thailand saw multiple queer couples at an event organized by the city officials at the Siam Paragon shopping center, one of Bangkok's grandest shopping malls to register their union. This event was attended by many including older couples who've been waiting to legalize their relationship for years, a Korean couple, and even a couple who could finally adopt a child and live as a family. This law will assist a transgender woman who has been unable to marry her boyfriend of 22 years because she cannot legally change her gender identity which prevents them from living as a married couple. X was soon flooded with people sharing celebratory stories of queer couples who legally married their partners.

In a time when countries are trying to disregard other sexualities, take away their basic human rights, and restrict queer folks from spending their lives with the ones they love, Thailand's marriage equality law comes as the best news we've received in a while! We hope that this encourages other countries to review their marriage law so more people can live their lives more authentically and openly live with people they care about.
