Starring Lee Jun-Ho and Kim Min-Ha, Netflix’s Typhoon Family teaches us a thing or two about the world of trading!
Typhoon Family review: If you’ve been a K-drama fan for a while now, you’d be rather familiar with the IMF crisis that Korea went through back in the 90s. Just how the India- Pakistan conflict is an overly used trope in Indian films today, the IMF crisis has also been a part of a plethora of storylines in K-dramas over the years. But Lee Jun-Ho and Kim Min-Ha’s Typhoon Family takes that trope and turns it into something we have never seen before.
The story centers around Kang Tae-Poong (Lee Jun-Ho), a spoiled rich kid who does not really have a set goal in his life. Until his father, played by Sung Dong-Il, unexpectedly passes away and he has to take over his family business. If that wasn’t enough, thanks to the IMF crisis, just like every other business went under back then, his was no different either. Overnight he loses everything that he has and along with a trusted group of employees, he tries to re-build his father’s company from scratch. Tae-Poong and his crew are constantly faced with obstacles but their zest to just make anything and everything happen just makes you root for them immensely!

All of us love a good rags to riches story and investing in Lee Jun-Ho as a hero is the best thing you can do as you binge this series. But, the one who really stole the show for me was Kim Min-Ha. This was the first time I watched her on-screen and she melted my heart as Oh Mi-Seon. The camera loves her and it shows when her eyes do all the talking! Her slow burn chemistry with Lee Jun-Ho also became a highlight of the show and something that made me want to look forward to it every week!
Typhoon Family also beautifully portrays how ‘family’ does not always mean something you’re born into. It is about the people who show up for you when you least expect it and when you’re at your lowest. For instance, when Kang Tae-Poong and his mom move into Oh Mi-Seon’s guest house when they lose their house, the story takes a rather wholesome turn. Seeing Kang Tae-Poong’s mom form a relationship with Oh Mi-Seon’s family, especially her younger brother, proves that blood relations aren’t everything after all!
For a show set in Korea’s economic crisis and with a cast that consists of powerhouses of talent, Typhoon Family is still rather underrated amongst the swarm of content around us. And maybe that’s exactly why you need to give this one a chance!
All episodes of Typhoon Family are currently streaming on Netflix!
