Surekha Sikri passed away today, at the age of 75, due to a cardiac arrest. She was famously known for her character in Badhaai Ho and the TV show Balika Vadhu.
Surekha Sikri, a three-time national award winner passed away today in Mumbai. She died of cardiac arrest at the age of 75. The veteran actor was ailing for a long time and had suffered two brain strokes in 2020 and 2018. The actor's manager confirmed the news speaking to indianexpress.com, “Three-time national award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke. She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. The family asks for privacy at this time. Om Sai Ram.”
She made her debut in 1978, with the political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka. She also won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress thrice, for her roles in Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995), and the recent one, Badhaai Ho (2018). But she reached every household with her prominent performance in the primetime soap opera Balika Vadhu, as Dadi Sa. Also, her performance in the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Badhaai Ho, as his Dadi, was pathbreaking and drew immense acclaim for her. So much so that it was considered to be somewhat of a career comeback.
Born in UP, she was a properly trained actor who graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1971. Married to Hemant Rege she has a son Rahul Sikri. In Bollywood, she also featured in small but significant roles in films such as Zubeidaa, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, and Raincoat. On TV, she was seen in shows such as Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani, Pardes Mein Hai Mera Dil, Maa Exchange, Saat Phere. She was last seen in Netflix's anthology, Ghost Stories in the section helmed by Zoya Akhtar.
