Surviving summer: Dr. Bhagyashree shares tips and tricks keep your skin and hair happy

Summer is here and we're definitely not looking forward to getting annoyed by our skin and hair problems. We had a little chat Dr. Bhagyashree over the same where she shared some insights over doing it better during the hot weather.

Summer is the season of sun, fun, and skin and hair problems! That's right, folks, as much as we love to feel the warmth of the sun, our skin and hair don't always appreciate the attention. For starters, the harsh UV rays can leave our skin feeling dry and let's not forget about those pesky sunburns that have immense power to lower down our confidence. As for our hair, well, it's a battle against the humidity that seems to transform our sleek locks into a frizzy mess. And don't even get us started on the sweat that makes our scalp feel greasy. While we may love summertime, our skin and hair can be a little moody during these months but it doesn't have to be like that if you take care of a few things. Dr. Bhagyashree, a clinical cosmetologist, gives us some expert advice via these valuable tips and tricks.

Here's what she had to say!

What are some common skin and hair issues people face during the transition from winter to summer?

In winter most of our skin faces dryness because of cold weather and in summer our skin turns greasy, sweaty and oily because of heat waves, so with some people, there are chances of occurring heat rashes on the skin or body. The same happens with our hair and scalp, it gets oily, sweaty and greasy and also one can experience dandruff or heat boils on the scalp because of the overproduction of sebum (oil).

How can we protect our skin from sun damage during the summer months?

  • Use sunscreen and choose sunscreen with SPF 30 or 50 with pa+++ or pa++++ ratings.
  • Apply 2 fingers of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and also reapply every 2-3 hours.
  • Wear protective clothings. Also use a hat that covers your neck, ears and face and to protect your eyes from sun rays use shades.

What are some ways to keep our skin hydrated in the summer heat?

  •  Drink enough water so your body does not get dehydrated.
  • Apply hyaluronic acid to keep your skin hydrated and plump from outside.
  • Don’t forget to use a gel-based non-comedogenic moisturiser, yes your skin needs moisturisation in summer as well.

Are there any specific hair care tips that can help us maintain healthy hair during the summer?

  • Tie your hair loose to avoid sweat formation in your scalp.
  •  Consider using a hat or scarf to cover your head area when you’re out in the sun.
  •  You must use gentle shampoos, conditioner, masks and wash your hair at least 3-4 times a week, as it keeps the scalp clean and prevents excess oiliness and also not oil your hair for longer duration it may increase the chances of dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and more.
  •  Try using less hair styling products as the heat transferred through them can damage your hairs.
  • Also if you want to protect your hair colour, use spray or powder sunscreen for hair.

Can diet play a role in maintaining healthy skin and hair during the changing seasons?

Diet does play a big role to maintain healthy skin and hair throughout the seasons. Nutrient-rich diet like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, proteins, healthy fats, seeds, dry fruits helps maintain your overall health and also results in good skin and hair. Also Stay hydrated no matter what the weather is like.

Can you suggest some specific products that we should include in our skincare routine? And what changes should be made during the seasonal change.

First of all it’s very important to understand that our skin doesn’t need same skincare regimen/ products throughout the year, you must switch the products according to how your skin is transitioning into (dry, combination and oily) in winters. Our skin tends to be on the drier side so we have to use products that protects our skin barrier and keep our skin moist and hydrated such as Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, and others and when our skin faces humid weather i.e in summer’s it turns more greasy, sweaty and oily, thus occurs clogging of pores and heat rashes hence there’s outrage of acne so you have to use foaming or gel based cleansers containing AHA/BHA, if sensitive skin use mandelic acid based cleansers, go for light weight non-comedogenic moisturisers and oil free makeup.

Are there any specific products or ingredients we should avoid during the summer months?

You must avoid heavy, thick, pore-clogging skincare products or makeup, Do not wash your face repeatedly in a day that can produce more sebum(oil) which can again worsen the skin condition and also same goes with the scalp, do not over do it, keep it simple.

Are there any specific tips for people with sensitive skin or allergies during the summer season?

  • Stay indoors until evening to avoid skin or other allergies from pollution and sun.
  • Even if you are indoors, wear your sunscreen.
  • Avoid spicy and junk food.
  • Drink an adequate amount of water.
