Finally, after a long and tedious wait, the trailer for season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters just dropped, taking us back into the Monsterverse. From the get-go, the trailer introduces the new big bad of this season, Titan X, a Titan that doesn’t belong to our natural order. And promises to unravel more mysteries that define the titular Monarch, an organisation that tracks and researches these Titans but has a history shrouded in darkness.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is an original show in the Monsterverse that not only explains the origins of the organisation, but also fills in the gaps left by the movies. The series seems to be picking up right where it left off last season, with the return of Cate Randa (Anna Sawai), her grandmother Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), and May (Kiersey Clemons) from Axis Mandi, with the efforts of Kentaro (Ren Watabe) and Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira). Apart from them, Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell) might be taking centre stage this season, as part of his redemption journey.

The trailer hasn’t given us a full reveal of Titan X or its scientific name yet. All we can see are its unusually dual-pupil eyes and long tentacles that can surely crush a ship in a matter of seconds. The only thing we learn about it is that it hails from Axis Mundi, a dimension between our world and the Hollow Earth where time seems to run differently, and our beloved guardians, the God of monsters, Godzilla and the King of the Hollow Earth, King Kong, might have to team up to fight it. Since this season takes place between the first ‘Godzilla’ and the second film ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’, it would very well set up why the King went against the God in the third film, ‘Godzilla vs Kong’.

Another important detail to note in the trailer is the format of storytelling, which will remain the same as the previous season. With the story taking place in the present with Cate, Kentaro, Keiko, May Hiroshi, and an older version of Lee Shaw played by Kurt Russell, mixed with flashbacks from the 60’s and 70’s with Keiko, Bill Randa (Anders Holm), and the younger version of Lee Shaw played by Wyatt Russell. Each flashblack might connect more dots to why the world ended up the way it is in the present. The season seems to revolve around the idea of what happens when human curiosity and greed become more important than world-altering monsters. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 is set to air from 27th February on AppleTV+
