S-Line K-drama

S-Line, a six episode series that barely anyone knew about, instantly caught everyone’s attention with its one of a kind theme. Here’s why!

In today’s world where privacy has become a rare experience with AI and social media has taken over every part of our lives, S-Line shows us a dystopian future of what things could look like for us if it got out of hand. The plot revolves around high school student, Sin Hyeon Heup who has the power to see everyone’s sexual history through the red lines that connect them from their heads. What started as a hilarious concept soon turned into something dark. The red lines not only put everyone’s sexual past for the whole world to see, it also raises serious questions about consent and the fear of being slut shamed by society. Just how she judged her uncle, who is also a cop investigating all the murders happening back to back in the neighbourhood, since he has multiple red lines coming out of his head, hinting at his very many sexual encounters.

How will Hyeon Heup use her powers to find the killer is where the crux of the series lies! As she first starts getting used to her powers, she finds it fascinating to see who has slept with who and who is lying through their teeth. But things take a serious turn when she sees stuff like a student who has slept with her professor or people, who have never had sex, feeling lonely too. Even though the show immediately became the talk of the town because of its 'never seen before' concept, it still is off the international market for binging as it’s only available on Wavve, the Korean OTT app. But scenes from the show were being passed around on Reels and they made it to a lot of our algorithms while doomscrolling. Because of its red line concept, the show unintentionally started an internet trend which might look amusing at first but as you dig deeper into the story, it does make you wonder if this was really even the point of it all.

Instead of stirring important conversations around the need to know everything these days or how eventually AI might be misused in a way that our sexual histories are out in the open, it all turned into yet another random trend to hop on! From teenagers to grown adults participating in the trend, it really makes you want to take a step back and think, should we really be consuming everything that’s fed to us on the internet? Can anything and everything become a trend these days? Does basic research over a show not matter anymore? While it’s great that shows made even on a smaller scale are driving the internet wild and prove that a good series doesn't need a big budget, just a good story, it still makes you want to take a step back and ask if you’re the only one who can see how problematic this is.

With Korean dramas reaching a wider audience every single day, the need to constantly re-invent themselves to give out new stories is high and they clearly do not disappoint on that front! But maybe we, as an audience, need to do better and know what to romanticize! Leaving you with this food for thought as you ponder over where to watch this show!
