group 7

Guess, it's a huge time for numbers! After the infamous and confusing 6 7 meme, the internet is going crazy over being part of Group 7. We try to decode what this truly means.

There are a lot of things we are uncertain about in life. But one thing that makes these uncertain times slightly more interesting is the internet. You cannot just be on the internet and not find a new trend, which successfully keeps you distracted from life itself. You are no longer worrying about these uncertain times, but spending hours trying to understand that one conversation happening online. The craze around ‘Group 7’ is possibly the best way to describe this feeling.

If you have no idea what ‘Group 7’ is, it could mean two things. One, you are not chronically online and two, sadly, according to the internet, you are not that special. There is a section of the internet has been going bonkers over the fact that they are part of Group 7, that is, somehow, being deemed as the most elite and powerful group. But what is this group all about? What community is it going to be a part of? Why are people talking about it and, is no one else finding the videos in their feed?

How did it begin?

Apparently, this began as part of a 'scientific experiment' by singer Sophia James, who decided to use her TikTok platform to try and understand how algorithm works. A now genius plan to promote her album Unfair, she made seven consecutive videos addressing people without knowing who would get to see them. Each video was posted without having a target group in mind, but totally as an experiment. While each group had it's own video, the one for Group 7 caught on quickly.

Sophie's first TikTok video was on a parking ticket which was followed by one titled "Post No. 2". It was after her third video that she began assigning group numbers, trying to juggle with her algorithm and test which video got the most views. Eventually, it was her seventh video that inadvertently went viral and became the infamous "Group 7" trend.

Why are people referencing it?

Like many trends, the reason why users have been using and referencing it online remains unknown. Considering it was one of the few videos from her series to reach a broader audience compared to the rest, people have attributed a sense of uniqueness to finding the video in their feeds organically. Like 'the chosen one', people assumed the role and decided to show off with their followers.

Without proper context, they take it as a badge they are willing to bear, making the most of it by sharing videos. Captioning their clips as “POV: You’re a Group 7 member”, they are sharing videos that keep the mystery surrounding what being part of the group actually means. While many are busy flaunting their Group 7 status, those still clueless about its meaning have been creating hilarious parodies and sketches. Sophie, who is trying her hand at cracking the code on how algorithms work, calls this craze 'a dream come true,' especially as an artist who is focused on making music to build communities and bring people closer.

Here's how people have been reacting:

This trend is proof of how the internet is the best place where people don’t mind being part of the herd as long as they get to enjoy and have fun. With zero context and just the will to bring out their most creative, random and funny approach for the people online, this trend shows us the beauty of shared humour and culture within the digital space.
